Recently we attended the Predator Free Pēwhairangi Whānui (PFPW) Hui and Celebration at The Landing in the Purerua Mataroa peninsula, Bay of Islands. The hui brought together the four projects that form the PFPW collective, local hapū Ngāti Torehina who is also involved in the collective, neighbours, PF2050 DOC national and regional leadership, Far North District councillor Kelly Stratford and representatives of Foundation North.

Ngāti Torehina as haukainga opened the day with their whaikōrero, sharing more about their history, deep connection to the whenua and spirit of kaitikiatanga. PFPW projects shared highlights and learnings from the past four years since the beginning of the collective.

As the day progressed, we also heard from Tim Robinson, The Landing’s General Manager Operations, who shared thoughts about the positive impact of predator control on hospitality businesses, and DOC’s PF2050 Manager Pim de Monchy sharing an overview of the national programme, the priorities and opportunities for the next 5 years.

Sam Johnson, PFPW Project Manager, gave an update on the new funding secured from Foundation North, and renewed commitment from Northland Regional Council (NRC) and Department of Conservation (DOC), and Andy Boor from Project Island Song delivered a thought-provoking presentation about the potential of wider collaboration in the region.

It was great to catch up with the projects and to celebrate the great momentum the collective is experiencing. With financial security, PFPW is well-placed to keep delivering on its elimination goals, and growing its impact in the rohe.
